NEI Treatment Systems, LLC was founded in Los Angeles, California in 1997 to provide wastewater treatment compliance services to the major oil and power companies in the United States. NEI has always focused on developing innovative solutions to clients needs. It is this approach that we brought to the ballast water treatment issue in 2002.  

The concept of deoxygenation as a ballast water treatment method had been tested successfully in the laboratory. In addition, the possibility of simultaneously reducing corrosion of ballast tanks stirred interest in the shipping community. But, until now no method to effectively deoxygenate water had been developed for large-scale shipboard application. NEI's patented ballast water treatment method, Venturi Oxygen Stripping™, has been developed to address this issue.  

To evaluate the effectiveness of our method, a team of scientists from the University of Maryland, the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, and the US Naval Research Laboratory were awarded a series of grants from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Sea Grant Program. Their research is proving that Venturi Oxygen Stripping™ is an effective ballast water treatment method that significantly reduces corrosion.
